Should You Itemize in 2026?

July 23, 2026

Should You Itemize in 2026? Here’s How to Decide

One of the most common questions taxpayers ask each year is whether they should claim the standard deduction or itemize deductions.

For the 2026 tax year, the answer is usually straightforward: choose the option that gives you the larger deduction. If your allowable itemized deductions exceed your standard deduction, itemizing will generally lower your taxable income. Otherwise, taking the standard deduction is typically the better choice.

Here’s how the rules work.

How the Choice Works

Under the Internal Revenue Code, taxpayers generally have two options when calculating taxable income:

  • Claim the standard deduction, or
  • Elect to itemize deductions on their federal tax return.

You generally cannot claim both. Your goal is to choose whichever option results in the greatest tax savings.

2026 Standard Deduction Amounts

For the 2026 tax year, the standard deduction amounts are:

  • Single: $16,100
  • Married Filing Separately: $16,100
  • Head of Household: $24,150
  • Married Filing Jointly: $32,200
  • Qualifying Surviving Spouse: $32,200

Additional Standard Deduction for Age 65 or Blindness

  • Single or Head of Household: Additional $2,050 for each qualifying condition
  • Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, or Qualifying Surviving Spouse: Additional $1,650 for each qualifying spouse or individual

These additional amounts can make the standard deduction even more valuable for eligible taxpayers.

Common Itemized Deductions

If you choose to itemize, some of the most common deductions include:

  • State and local taxes (SALT)
  • Qualified mortgage interest
  • Charitable contributions
  • Medical and dental expenses
  • Qualified disaster losses

Not every expense is fully deductible. Many deductions are subject to specific IRS limitations and income thresholds.

Important 2026 Itemized Deduction Limits

Before deciding to itemize, remember these important limitations.

State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction

  • $40,400 maximum deduction
  • $20,200 if Married Filing Separately

The deduction begins to phase down for higher-income taxpayers but generally cannot fall below the statutory minimum.

Medical Expenses

Only qualifying unreimbursed medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) are generally deductible.

Charitable Contributions

Beginning in 2026, taxpayers who itemize generally may deduct charitable contributions only to the extent they exceed 0.5% of AGI, subject to applicable contribution limits.

Overall Itemized Deduction Limitation

Higher-income taxpayers may also see their total itemized deductions reduced under the modified overall limitation that applies beginning in 2026.

When Itemizing Usually Makes Sense

Itemizing is generally worthwhile if your allowable deductions exceed your standard deduction after applying all IRS limits.

You may benefit from itemizing if you have:

  • Significant mortgage interest
  • State and local taxes near the SALT limit
  • Large charitable donations
  • High medical expenses
  • Qualified disaster losses

If your deductions do not exceed your standard deduction, claiming the standard deduction will usually produce the better tax result.

Who Cannot Claim the Standard Deduction?

Some taxpayers generally are not eligible for the standard deduction.

Examples include:

  • Married individuals filing separately when the other spouse itemizes deductions
  • Certain nonresident aliens
  • Some short-period tax returns
  • Estates and trusts

If one of these situations applies, special IRS rules may determine your allowable deductions.

Can You Still Claim Other Deductions Without Itemizing?

Yes.

Choosing the standard deduction does not prevent you from claiming several other deductions that are available outside of itemized deductions.

Depending on your eligibility, you may still qualify for:

  • Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction
  • Qualified Tips deduction
  • Qualified Overtime deduction
  • Charitable deduction for non-itemizers (subject to annual limits)

Beginning in 2026, eligible non-itemizers may generally deduct up to:

  • $1,000 for Single filers
  • $2,000 for Married Filing Jointly

for qualifying cash contributions to eligible charitable organizations.

Final Thoughts

For most taxpayers, the decision is simple: compare your total allowable itemized deductions with your standard deduction and choose the larger amount.

Because tax law changes have increased the standard deduction while modifying several itemized deduction rules, many taxpayers now benefit more from claiming the standard deduction. However, homeowners, charitable donors, and individuals with significant medical expenses may still find that itemizing provides greater tax savings.

Reviewing your deductions each year helps ensure you pay only the tax you legally owe.
