AOTC vs Lifetime Learning Credit

August 10, 2026

AOTC vs. Lifetime Learning Credit: Which Saves You More in 2026?

Paying for higher education can be expensive, but the right education tax credit can significantly reduce your federal tax bill.

For 2026, the two primary education tax credits remain the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) and the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). While both help offset qualified education expenses, they serve different purposes and have different eligibility requirements.

In most cases, the American Opportunity Tax Credit provides the larger tax benefit if the student qualifies. However, the Lifetime Learning Credit offers greater flexibility for graduate students, career advancement, and continuing education.

Here’s how the two credits compare.

Understanding the Two Education Credits

The IRS allows eligible taxpayers to claim education tax credits under Internal Revenue Code Section 25A.

Although both credits may reduce your federal income tax, you cannot claim both the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit for the same student during the same tax year.

Choosing the right credit depends on the student’s education level, enrollment status, and your overall tax situation.

American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)

The American Opportunity Tax Credit generally provides the greatest tax savings for eligible undergraduate students.

For 2026, the maximum credit is:

  • Up to $2,500 per eligible student
  • 100% of the first $2,000 of qualified education expenses
  • 25% of the next $2,000 of qualified expenses

One of the biggest advantages of the AOTC is that up to 40% of the credit (maximum $1,000) may be refundable, allowing some taxpayers to receive a refund even if they owe little or no federal income tax.

Who Qualifies for the AOTC?

Generally, the student must:

  • Be pursuing a degree, certificate, or other recognized educational credential
  • Be enrolled at least half-time for at least one academic period during the year
  • Not have completed the first four years of postsecondary education before the tax year begins
  • Not have claimed the AOTC for more than four tax years
  • Not have a federal or state felony drug conviction at the end of the tax year

Because of its higher maximum credit and refundable portion, the AOTC is typically the preferred option whenever the student qualifies.

Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC)

The Lifetime Learning Credit is designed for a much broader range of educational situations.

For 2026, eligible taxpayers may claim:

  • 20% of up to $10,000 of qualified education expenses
  • A maximum credit of $2,000 per tax return

Unlike the AOTC, the Lifetime Learning Credit is nonrefundable. It can reduce your tax liability to zero but generally cannot generate a tax refund.

Who Should Consider the LLC?

The Lifetime Learning Credit may be the better option if you are:

  • Attending graduate school
  • Taking continuing education classes
  • Improving job skills
  • Taking college courses without pursuing a degree
  • Enrolled less than half-time

Unlike the AOTC, there is no limit on the number of years the LLC may be claimed if eligibility requirements continue to be met.

Income Limits for 2026

Both credits share the same modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) phaseout ranges.

The credits begin to phase out when MAGI exceeds:

  • $80,000 for Single or Head of Household filers
  • $160,000 for Married Filing Jointly

The credits are fully phased out once MAGI reaches:

  • $90,000 for Single or Head of Household
  • $180,000 for Married Filing Jointly

Taxpayers who are Married Filing Separately generally cannot claim either education credit.

Qualified Education Expenses

Both credits cover qualified education expenses, but the definitions differ slightly.

For the American Opportunity Tax Credit, qualified expenses generally include:

  • Tuition
  • Required enrollment fees
  • Books
  • Course materials
  • Required supplies

Books and course materials may qualify even if purchased outside the educational institution.

For the Lifetime Learning Credit, qualified expenses generally include:

  • Tuition
  • Required enrollment fees
  • Books, supplies, and equipment only when they must be purchased directly from the institution as a condition of enrollment

Education expenses paid using tax-free assistance—such as scholarships, Pell Grants, veterans’ educational assistance, or employer-provided educational assistance—generally cannot also be used to calculate either credit.

New Filing Requirements Beginning in 2026

Beginning with 2026 tax returns, stricter identification requirements apply.

Taxpayers generally must provide:

  • A valid Social Security Number (SSN) for the taxpayer
  • A valid SSN for the spouse if filing jointly
  • A valid SSN for any qualifying student claimed
  • The Employer Identification Number (EIN) of the eligible educational institution

In most cases, taxpayers should also receive Form 1098-T unless a qualifying exception applies.

Failure to meet these filing requirements could result in the education credit being denied.

Which Credit Is Better?

For most eligible undergraduate students, the American Opportunity Tax Credit provides greater tax savings because:

  • It offers a larger maximum credit.
  • It is calculated per eligible student.
  • A portion of the credit may be refundable.

The Lifetime Learning Credit is generally the better option when:

  • The student has already used the AOTC for four years.
  • The student is attending graduate school.
  • The student is enrolled less than half-time.
  • The education is for career advancement or professional development rather than a degree program.

Final Thoughts

Both education credits remain valuable tax-saving opportunities for 2026, but choosing the correct one depends on your individual circumstances.

If the student qualifies, the American Opportunity Tax Credit will usually provide the greater benefit because of its higher maximum value and partial refundability. The Lifetime Learning Credit, however, offers broader eligibility and can continue providing tax savings long after undergraduate education is complete.

Carefully reviewing your income, education expenses, and the new identification requirements before filing can help maximize your tax benefits and avoid unnecessary IRS delays.
